RENTAL HOUSING
The Environmental Health Division is a code enforcement agency that insures the health and wellbeing of Waterbury residents through code enforcement and compliance with public health codes for rental housing.
In Connecticut, the public health codes governing rental housing are primarily outlined in the Connecticut General Statues, Chapter 832: Landlord and Tenant. This chapter includes various health and safety standards that rental properties must meet, such as:
- Structural integrity: Rental units must be structurally sound with secure floors, walls, and roofs.
- Plumbing and sanitation: All rental units must have access to working sinks, toilets, and shower or bathtubs with hot and cold running water.
- Heating: There must be a safe, working heat source, especially during cold months.
- Infestation control: Landlords are responsible for ensuring rentals are free from vermin, insects, or rodent infestations.
- Ventilation and lighting: Rental units must have adequate ventilation and natural or artificial lighting.
To make a complaint about a rental unit, call the Waterbury Health Department Environmental Health Division at 203-346-3903.
An inspector will be assigned to investigate the complaint.
