Lights On After School Events Announced

The Waterbury Prevention Policy Board and its community partners are pleased to announce that Waterbury will be participating in the nationwide celebration of Lights on Afterschool , to call attention to the importance of afterschool programs for all Waterbury children, and to highlight and showcase the many programs that Waterbury has to offer. The Waterbury Prevention Policy Board has organized a series of open houses for local after school programs. All community members will be able to visit the programs, talk with staff and students, learn more about each program, and learn if there is open registration and enrollment.

The Lights on Afterschool open houses will take place between October 8, 2008 and October 16, 2008 during the after school time frame.

The schedule of events is as follows:

Wednesday October 8, 2008

2:00-4:00 pm: Sylvan Learning Center

During our open house Sylvan will be presenting information on our different after school programs: reading, writing, math, and study skills. Since we have open enrollment and flexible scheduling, parents will be able to sign their students up for testing at their convenience. Sylvan will also be raffling off school supplies and a free diagnostic assessment, a $225 value.

4-6 pm: Waterbury Youth Services

Waterbury Youth Services will be showcasing several of our After School Educational and Youth Development programs. Teens from our Entrepreneurial program will be showing off some of the products they have designed and made. Our Tech - Media group can talk to you about their exciting projects and show you some of the productions they have worked on. There will also be representatives from our Peer-to-Peer Tutoring Program.

Youth Teaching Youth: Members of the LEAD (Leaders Educating Against Drinking) Teen group are looking for teens to join their community prevention projects. Stop by and talk to them. Resources will be available for parents and youth in both Spanish and English. Face painting and balloon animals will also be available.

4:00-7:00 pm:

Palace Theatre

The Palace Theater supports The Waterbury Prevention Policy Board’s Initiative, “Lights on After School,” with a special Open House learning opportunity on October 8, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Teachers, schools, students and organizations are invited to participate in backstage tours, coloring contests, and a Wizard of Oz ticket giveaway, while learning about the Palace Theater Education Department and its numerous after-school programs and educational initiatives:

  • Dances With Words: After School Dance –Poetry Program (registration on site)
  • Palatial News : Theater-Journalism Program
  • Learning in the Wings : Backstage Internships
  • I Give My Word : Drama –Poetry Workshops
  • Ballroom Blitz : Ballroom-Health Program
  • Service Learning Programs
  • Field Trips to the ShopRite Education Series

3:30--8:00 pm- Hispanic Coalition of Greater Waterbury and ASPIRA of CT

Hispanic Coalition of Greater Waterbury :

The Hispanic Coalition will be presenting a cultural arts program which consists of various types of performances: an on stage theatrical performance; 'salsa' dance instruction, arts & crafts, and a youth community choir. This program involves parents as well as children

ASPIRA of CT:

The Youth Leadership Development Program (LPD) is the core program of ASPIRA, giving instructions in leadership training, cultural enrichment activities, and community action projects. Teaching students how to development the ability to become effective leaders of their community, ASPIRA students learn the “ASPIRA Process” of awareness, analysis and action.

2:45pm-4:30pm: CPEP

CPEP is an afterschool, Saturday and Summer Program. Our mission is to help underrepresented students explore, prepare for, and reach their full potential in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). We accomplish our mission by delivering extraordinary hands on out of school programs that ignite the intellectual curiosity of our students, and channel that curiosity into the potential pursuit of careers associated with STEM.

4pm-6pm: Greater Waterbury YMCA

The Greater Waterbury YMCA provides affordable, high quality before and after school care to children in K-5 th grade in Waterbury, Watertown and Prospect. Children receive homework assistance, nutritious snacks, and experience fun and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Staff will have registration packets and Care 4 Kids applications available on site at all of the programs for parents interested in enrolling their children into the program. We will also have a coloring contest


at each location and have all of the children that attend participate and color a light bulb.

3:00-5:00pm: Waterbury Police Activities League

The Police Activity League of Waterbury, Inc. (PAL) provides the youth of the Greater Waterbury area with positive guidance during their crucial childhood years. Waterbury PAL will have board games, volleyball and refreshment during the open house. There is open enrollment for all Waterbury PAL programs. Waterbury PAL is open to all children and youth, ages 4 to 18, in the Greater Waterbury area, and offers a variety of team and individual sports and activities. Membership fee of $25 per year, per child, and no child is ever turned away as a result of family income, inability to pay the membership fee, social background, or past involvement with the law.

The Waterbury Prevention Policy Board is a community collaborative of Waterbury stakeholders working together to increase positive youth development. Lights On Afterschool is a nationwide event to recognize the critical importance of quality afterschool programs in the lives of children, their families and communities. It is a project of the Afterschool Alliance – a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization working to ensure that all children have access to quality afterschool programs.
