Boil Water Notice Issued; Water Distribution and Community Resources Available for Affected Residents
(WATERBURY, CT.) The City of Waterbury is providing an update regarding the ongoing repair efforts related to the transmission water main break on Tompkins Street. Approximately 15,020 homes and businesses remain impacted by the outage while the Water Department and Dayton Construction crews continue working to repair the second break identified during restoration efforts.
The City of Waterbury is advising residents in the affected areas that a Boil Water Notice is now in effect due to the potential for contamination as a result of the water main break and loss of pressure within the system.
Residents in the affected areas are required to boil all water used for drinking, brushing teeth, cooking, and food preparation for a full one minute to kill any potential harmful bacteria that may be present in the water. Residents should continue this practice until the Boil Water Notice has been lifted by the Water Department.
Water may be used for bathing by individuals who do not have open wounds. Those who are immunocompromised should take additional precautions. Babies and individuals who may be immunocompromised should use baby wipes or a clean washcloth with bottled water or boiled and cooled water for bathing until the Boil Water Notice is lifted. Baby formula should be prepared using bottled water only.
Affected homes and businesses include all previously impacted areas, as well as the Town Plot and Country Club neighborhoods.
The city will continue operating its bottled water distribution site at Municipal Stadium, North Parking Lot, 1200 Watertown Avenue, throughout the weekend. Distribution hours are:
Saturday, August 1: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, August 2: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Residents are also encouraged to bring their own clean buckets or containers to the distribution site if they need water for non-drinking purposes, including flushing toilets.
The city would also like to thank the Greater Waterbury YMCA for generously extending shower access to residents affected by the outage. Shower availability will be provided during the following weekend hours:
Saturday, August 1: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sunday, August 2: 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The city reminds residents that restaurants and food service establishments located within the affected areas may not operate during a Boil Water Notice unless they have an approved alternate source of water and a plan reviewed and approved by the Waterbury Health Department. Restaurants in the impacted areas have been working cooperatively with the Health Department’s sanitarians. The Waterbury Health Department encourages residents to dine at restaurants located in areas of the city that are not impacted by the water main break until the Boil Water Notice has been lifted.
