Waterbury to Celebrate Grand Opening and Dedication of North Side Fire Station

(WATERBURY, CT) Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. invites members of the public, elected officials, community partners, and the media to attend the Grand Opening and Dedication Ceremony for the City of Waterbury's newly renovated North Side Fire Station.

The ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Waterbury Fire Department Station 1, 1979 North Main Street.

Originally constructed in 1970, Station 1 had never undergone a major renovation until now. The completed $5.7 million rehabilitation project transformed the facility into a modern fire station designed to meet the evolving needs of the Waterbury Fire Department while preserving its vital role in protecting the community.

Managed by the Waterbury Development Corporation, the project included completely modernized living quarters, upgraded apparatus bays, enhanced safety systems, improved building infrastructure, and a more efficient layout to better support firefighters and emergency response operations. Of the project's $5.7 million cost, $235,000 in Federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding supported the architectural and design services for the renovation. The project was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.

"This project represents an investment in the safety of both our firefighters and the residents they serve every day," said Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. "For more than five decades, Station 1 has been a cornerstone of emergency response in Waterbury. This renovation ensures that our firefighters have a modern, functional facility that reflects the professionalism and dedication they bring to our community, while positioning this station to effectively serve the residents and businesses of Waterbury for decades to come."

The ceremony will include a formal dedication of the renovated station, remarks from city officials, and a ribbon cutting. Members of the public and media are encouraged to attend as the city celebrates this significant investment in public safety infrastructure.
