City of Waterbury Announces Final Paving on Thomaston Avenue Following Water Main Repairs

(Waterbury, CT) The City of Waterbury announces that final paving on Thomaston Avenue will take place tomorrow, January 15, marking the completion of repair and restoration work following the December water main emergency.

Paving operations are scheduled to begin between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Crews are on site today preparing the roadway in advance of the paving work. Tilcon will open specifically to supply paving materials for this project, and Dayton Construction will perform the paving operations.

While the city anticipates the paving work will be completed tomorrow, Thomaston Avenue is not expected to reopen to traffic until after daylight hours due to curing time and final safety checks. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly and follow posted detours and traffic control signage.

“This project represents the final step in a long and challenging recovery effort,” said Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr. “I want to thank our residents and businesses for their patience, and I am especially grateful to our crews and contractors who worked under difficult conditions to restore this critical infrastructure safely and responsibly.”

Water Superintendent Brad Malay emphasized the coordination required to reach this stage of the work. “From emergency repairs to full restoration, this has been a complex operation,” said Malay. “Completing the final paving brings this project to a close, and I appreciate the dedication of our Water Department staff, our contractors, and our partners who supported the work from start to finish.”

In addition to completing the Thomaston Avenue repairs, the city is actively evaluating next steps to strengthen and modernize its water infrastructure. This includes reviewing system performance during the emergency, identifying priority areas for replacement and upgrades, and pursuing long term planning and investment strategies to improve system resilience and reduce the risk of future large scale disruptions.

“This event underscored the importance of continued investment in our infrastructure,” Mayor Pernerewski added. “We are focused on applying what we have learned and moving forward with responsible planning to improve the long term reliability of our water system.”

The city thanks residents, businesses, and commuters for their cooperation throughout the repair process and during the final paving phase. Updates regarding traffic reopening will be shared through the city’s official communication channels.
