Exchange Place Downtown Streetscape Project

The City of Waterbury Engineering Department is pleased to announce that as part of the next phase of the Exchange Place Streetscape project, the City is seeking to implement intersection and safety improvements at South Main Street and Scovill Street.

Under consideration is the removal of the stop bar, stop sign, and crosswalk (shown with red x’s) at the center of the intersection as shown on the attached diagram.

The intersection will be changed to create an all-way stop condition which should improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians.

The purpose of this pilot program is to determine the effectiveness of a new stop bar and stop sign for North Bound traffic on South Main Street.  This will help us finalize our design work.

As part of this exercise, temporary pavement markings will be installed and the existing pavement markings will be blacked out.  The period of observation will begin on June 15, 2025 and end on October 15, 2025.

The Engineering Department may be contacted at 203-574-6851 if anyone has questions regarding this program or to provide comments on this pilot project.
