The Waterbury PAL-Taft Summer Enrichment Academy

Waterbury PAL is pleased to offer the Summer Enrichment Academy at the Taft School in 2022. This program is free of charge to PAL members who are residents of Waterbury, a child of a Waterbury Police Office, or a child of an employee of the Taft School. 

The Summer Enrichment Academy (current 5th – 8th grade)

The Summer Enrichment Academy is available for incoming 5th, 6th,  7th,  and 8th graders.  Students in this program will live at home, but attend classes at Taft in the mornings from July 5 to July 29, with an orientation on Tuesday, June 28m at 5 p.m. Small-group tutoring in English and Math test preparation will be provided.  Additionally, a classroom elective, with some element of student choice will be provided.  Between 50-60 students will be accepted, and PAL will provide transportation for a maximum of 46 students from the PAL Office to The Taft School. How to apply for these program if you are a new applicant:

·  Be a current 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student in a Waterbury Public School and an active PAL member, as well as a resident of Waterbury.  If you are not an active PAL member, you may become one by signing up at the Waterbury PAL office at 64 Division Street. The office is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The cost is $30 a year to become a member of PAL. Keep the receipt indicating you are a member, as it will be needed later.    

·  Submit the following material online:

o    A completed application form

o    An essay of at least 100 words explaining why you should be selected to attend the Taft Summer Enrichment Academy. Submit this along with this attached application. 

o    Two recommendations: one from an English and one from a Math teacher

o    A copy of your student records: absence inquiry, student academic inquiry, student discipline inquiry, CMT or other standardized test scores, and school record. Your guidance counselor can provide you with this information and should include your grades for 5th, 6th and 7th grade.

·  Applications are due May 1, 2022.
