5/28/2021 - West Main Street Sidewalk Improvements

PRESS RELEASE

WEST MAIN STREET SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS

May 28, 2021

The City of Waterbury has received a Community Connectivity Grant from the State of Connecticut in support of a project to install concrete sidewalks on the north/west side of West Main Street (between Park Road and Chase Parkway), pedestrian handicapped sidewalk ramps, appropriate signage, and pavement markings. All improvements will be in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines.  The primary goal of the Community Connectivity Program is to make conditions safer and more accommodating for pedestrians, thereby encouraging more people to use this healthy and environmentally sustainable mode of travel. The new sidewalk will provide a connection between Naugatuck Valley Community College and the medical center, pharmacy, bank, restaurants, and other businesses located north of the project area. It will also provide safer and more convenient access to local medical offices for those using other transportation options.

Based upon a preliminary assessment, the construction cost will be approximately $555,000. The Community Connectivity Grant will provide $459,817 of the construction cost and the City of Waterbury will fund the balance of the costs. Semifinal design has been completed and the project is slated for construction during late summer 2021. This program will be administered by the City of Waterbury.

It is the City’s policy to keep residents informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.  It is important that the community share its concerns and provide input to assure the project is a success. The new sidewalk will be constructed entirely within the City’s Right of Way.

Due to COVID 19 it will not be possible to present the details of this project at an in-person Public Information Meeting or to make the plans available for review at the Bureau of Engineering office. However, Waterbury DPW is inviting interested parties to a virtual public information meeting which will be presented at a Zoom Meeting entitled “Forum for Public Input West Main Street Sidewalks”.

Anyone interested in obtaining further information or providing input may do so by contacting: Thomas F. Crowe, Jr., P.E., Civil Engineer II, at 203 574-6851 ext. 7177, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or via email at tcrowe@waterburyct.org.
