Safe Routes to School Project
State Project No. 151-324

The City of Waterbury has issued a Notice to Proceed, dated September 6, 2019, to Dayton
Construction Co., Inc. of Watertown, CT in order to implement a Federal Highway
Administration (FHWA) funded Safe Routes to School Program. Dayton Construction will have
120 days to complete all construction from the Notice to Proceed date. Construction is
anticipated to start on or about October 7, 2019.

The Safe Routes to School Program was initiated under FHWA to encourage students to walk
and bike to school as an alternative to riding to school in cars and/or buses. A goal of the
program is to afford the students an opportunity to improve their health by walking and
biking.

New sidewalks, handicap ramps, crosswalks and signage, including pedestrian activated
warning beacons, will be installed on Pearl Lake Road between Jersey Street and Tracy
Avenue. During construction on Pearl Lake Road, one traffic lane westbound will remain open
between Spring Lake Road and Jersey Street. Eastbound traffic on Pearl Lake Road will be
detoured to Jersey Street and Spring Lake Road. The detour will be in effect Monday through
Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Pearl Lake Road will be re-opened to two way traffic
daily at 6:00 p.m.

On Jersey Street, Brookview Avenue, Wyoming Avenue, Meadowbrook Drive, Jones Drive,
Longmeadow Drive and Fabian Street new pavement markings and traffic signage will be
installed to remind motorists that they will be sharing the road with students who elect to
ride their bikes to school. New pedestrian sidewalk ramps, crosswalks and traffic signage will
be installed at the intersections of Longmeadow Drive, Fabian Street, Spring Book Drive,
Quentin Street, and Holly Street with Jersey Street.

As part of the project, a bicycle rack will be installed on the John G. Gilmartin school
property.
