SHADOW PUPPET SHOW AT SILAS BRONSON LIBRARY

WATERBURY, CT – Master puppeteer Sarah Nolen returns to the Silas Bronson Library Children’s Room this Wednesday, May 4, at 6 p.m. for a fun, interactive shadow puppet show performance of “Lisa the Wise,” based on a Russian folktale.

In the classic fairy tale tradition, after her mother dies and her father leaves on business, Lisa’s evil stepmother and stepsisters make her their servant. Lisa’s mother gave her a doll before she died, and Lisa keeps it in her pocket for safe keeping. The doll helps Lisa on her journey to collect fire from Baba Yaga, an old witch who lives in the woods.

Sarah Nolen is a puppeteer and filmmaker from Austin, Texas. She has a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Puppetry from the University of Connecticut, as well as a bachelor's degree in Cinema-Television from Southern Methodist University. During her time at SMU, she also created a second, interdisciplinary degree in Children's Educational Television. With these two disciplines, Sarah hopes to carve out a career in children's educational media for children that is both entertaining and empowering!

As a puppeteer, Sarah has trained with Sandglass Theater and the National Puppetry Conference at the O'Neill Theater Center. In 2011, she completed a year-long improvisational training program at the Dallas Comedy House, continuing there as an improviser for several troupes and also creating the long-form puppet improv troupe "Commerce Street." She has taught puppet-improv training workshops as well as other puppet building workshops for all ages. Her solo puppet works have been selected for the National Puppet Slams of 2013, 2014 and 2015. She has performed as a puppeteer for Puppet Slams around the country, Puppets in the Green Mountains Festival, the Boston Pops Orchestra, EnvisionFEST Hartford, and The Out of Bounds Festival in Austin.

The Silas Bronson Library is the public library of the City of Waterbury. Located at 267 Grand Street, the Library is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from Labor Day to Memorial Day, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
