6/15/2015 - Water Bureau warns of scammer posing as City employee

The city Bureau of Water issued this warning on June 15:

"The Bureau of Water has received a report of an individual posing as a Water Department employee to gain access to a Waterbury home recently. This individual claimed to be from the Water Department, and needed to check on the water pressure.

"We advise homeowners not to allow individuals into their homes who claim to be from the Water Department unless they provide Water Department identification. Our employees carry Water Department IDs and drive vehicles marked with the City of Waterbury/Bureau of Water logo and have municipal license plates.

"If you have concerns about the identity of a person claiming to be a Water Department employee, call our customer service telephone number at 203-574-8251 for verification."

If you are still uncertain and can't reach the Water Department, call 9-1-1 and report it to police.

If anyone claiming to be from the City asks to enter your home for official business, always ask to see identification. If the person refuses to provide ID, call 9-1-1 immediately and report it to police.

This incident took place Thursday June 11. If you have elderly neighbors, please let them know of this.
