7/22/2013 - City of Waterbury and Department of Corrections Launch Initiative To Restore City Parks
State of Connecticut Department of Corrections (DOC) Commissioner James Dzurenda and Waterbury Mayor Neil M. O’Leary recently announced a new collaboration that will enlist clients of the DOC and apply the resources of the City of Waterbury to help restore and enhance neighborhood parks and recreation sites.

Under the supervision of both the DOC and the Waterbury Police Department, DOC clients will be provided transportation, basic equipment, protective gear and a lunch while they work with city personnel on their first major project, returning Scott Road Park to functional use, adding walking trails and allowing a section for dogs. The 30+ acre park was abandoned decades ago when the city was experiencing desperate financial times and major cutbacks, during which period nearly 40% of the workforce of the Department of Public Works was eliminated, including nearly 50% of the Parks and Recreation staff.
