The Arts and Tourism Commission, City of Waterbury (ATC) is proud to present the 2014 Arts and Culture Award to the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra (WSO). Each year, the ATC presents this award to a person or organization that excels in cultural activities and enhances the expansion of arts and culture in the city of Waterbury. The award includes a contribution towards the recipient’s mission. The ATC has honored outstanding arts organizations in this manner for more than twenty years. The WSO was selected for their outstanding concert series and inspiring education programs, in particular, their programs for Waterbury’s youth.
“On behalf of the entire Commission I am extremely proud to recognize the WSO with this award,” said ATC Chair Barbara Sticco. “The orchestra’s work on stage and in the community is of top notch quality, very creative, and collaborative with many other Waterbury region organizations.”
The ATC also awarded the WSO a grant in August 2013 for their Young People's Concerts featuring "Criss Cross Orchestra" on October 18, 2013 at the Palace Theater and October 19, 2013 at the Mattatuck Museum. The Young People’s Concerts endeavor to support the development of the whole child, including skills in musical development, social development, discipline and peer to peer communication while also providing a safe, fun activity for families. Approximately 1,000 children and 150 adults were served by this program.
“It is a touching honor to receive the 2014 Arts and Culture Award,” said WSO Executive Director Steve Collins. “The orchestra considers it a privilege to perform for generous, enthusiastic audiences, and work with the bright, energetic youth of greater Waterbury. We look forward to continuing the great traditions of orchestral music while striving to advance the art form in new and engaging ways. Thank you so much to the Arts & Tourism Commission and the people of Waterbury for believing in the power of music to change people’s lives.”
There will be an award ceremony on May 10, 2014, 8:00PM, at “Symphonie Fantastique” – the WSO season finale concert.
