Can a homeowner take out a building permit for the contractor they hire?

YES, a homeowner is able to take out a permit for the contractor they hire as long as they have an agent letter from the contractor authorizing the homeowner to obtain the permit on the contractor's behalf. Please note that in this instance, the contractor would need to do the work and be responsible for the work he has done. Please call the Department of Inspection at 203-574-6832 regarding any commercial work to be done.
