8/27/2014 - Waterbury Water Department Plans to Provide Valve Improvements for the Low Service Transmission Main
The Waterbury Bureau of Water is announcing plans to provide critical large valve improvements for the Low Service Transmission Main located on West Main St. A new 36” valve will be installed near the intersection of West Main and Judd St., and a broken 30 inch valve located just east of the intersection of West Main and Willow St. will be replaced. The project will utilize a by-pass water line from a hydrant on Willow Street running south on Meadow Street to a hydrant at the intersection of Brown Place to provide for continued water flow to the downtown area during the time of the shut down of the Transmission Main.
Excavation of West Main Street for the large valve replacement is scheduled to begin on Friday, Sept. 12, 2014 after 6 p.m. and is expected to be completed Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014. During that time, the westbound lanes of West Main Street will be closed to traffic from Holmes Avenue to Willow Street. In addition traffic will be closed on West Main St. from Willow St. west to Sperry St/Swift Pl. Traffic will be detoured onto other streets during this construction period.
Motorists should use caution when driving in this area, and should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen circumstances.
As with any large water valve replacement project, there may be some temporary discolored water and a potential small drop in water pressure for area water customers.
This valve work is critically important as it will enable reliable shut downs to the Low Service Transmission Main in the event of future leaks or breaks, without interrupting adequate flow and pressure to the downtown area and other service areas east of this location.
